April 14, 2014 | EditorialCorporate financing Emmanuel Daniel (ED): Is Investec a corporate finance platform or a capital markets – Stephen Koseff (SK): We have three areas of activity.Specialist banking, asset management, which is managing money on behalf of institutions, and wealth management, which is managing money on behalf of private clients. In our specialist banking business, we would have both corporate and private client activities. So we advise corporates on M&A, listings, IPOs, strategic transactions. We’ll also provide across the board funding and transaction services to the corporates, whether that be foreign exchange, money market, and commodity hedging. We’ll provide funding to them. We also provide a lot of services to private clients. ED: That’s like SME almost. SK: Not SME. We narrowly define our client base, so we deal with high income individuals, there’s your entry level, all the way to government. We’re middle corporate to large corporate because we have activities in other parts of the world. We have a bank in Mauritius, UK, the Channel Islands, Switzerland, and Australia. All client driven businesses. ED: It’s interesting that in South Africa, there’s a niche for specialist players like yourselves when this business could quite easily come out of a traditional commercial bank.
