The bank’s non-performing loan ratio was well below the median among Philippine banks in the ranking. Its loan-loss reserves provided the highest coverage of non-performing loans among its domestic peers, demonstrating its capacity to absorb potential credit losses. Metrobank also maintained a strong liquidity position, supported by a significant base of low-cost deposits and prudent balance sheet management. Its capital adequacy remained above the Philippine banking median, providing further resilience against potential financial pressures. The bank's record profitability was supported by growth in net interest income, stronger trading and foreign exchange income and disciplined operating expenses. Its performance demonstrated how consistent earnings generation, prudent credit management and stable funding can reinforce financial strength. Commercial Bank of Ceylon combines lending expansion with strong liquidity and improved asset quality Commercial Bank of Ceylon was named Strongest Bank in Sri Lanka for achieving rapid balance sheet growth alongside strong profitability, improved asset quality and sound liquidity management. The bank recorded net loan growth of 38%, the fastest among Sri Lankan banks in the ranking, as lending activity expanded during the country's economic recovery. Deposit growth and an improved current and savings account deposit ratio supported its funding position. Despite lending expanding faster than deposits, Commercial Bank of Ceylon maintained the strongest liquidity indicators among its domestic peers in the ranking. Its asset quality also improved, supported by stronger loan-loss provision coverage and disciplined credit management. Higher interest and fee income, combined with efficient operations, supported profitability. The bank maintained the lowest cost-to-income ratio among Sri Lankan banks in the ranking, reflecting its ability to manage operating expenses while expanding its lending business. Its performance underscored the importance of maintaining sufficient liquidity, funding stability and credit discipline during periods of accelerated lending growth. Financial strength increasingly reflects the balance between growth and resilience The 2026 rankings highlighted different approaches to maintaining banking strength. Metrobank’s performance was distinguished by asset quality, stable funding and record earnings, while Commercial Bank of Ceylon maintained liquidity and credit discipline during rapid lending expansion. The assessment also introduced sovereign risk as an additional factor in 2026, recognising the influence of national economic and financial conditions on individual banks' balance sheet strength. Together, these distinctions reinforced the importance of assessing banks across multiple financial dimensions rather than relying on profitability or growth alone.
