Digital transformation in higher education is often viewed as a technology initiative. In reality, its success depends on how effectively institutions can simplify daily experiences, remove friction from essential services and create engagement within their communities. In Thailand, Chulalongkorn University and KASIKORNBANK, known as KBank, embarked on a project to achieve this. Their collaboration led to the creation of CU NEX, a digital ecosystem platform that connects academic services, campus life, community engagement, healthcare and financial services through a single application. What began as a project to digitise university processes has evolved into a broader university ecosystem, showing how educational institutions can use technology, partnerships and embedded finance to create a more connected experience for students, faculty and staff. From fragmented services to a unified digital experience Before CU NEX, students had to navigate multiple platforms and manual processes for essential services, particularly course enrolment and fee payments, creating friction throughout the student journey. Recognising the need for a more integrated experience, Chulalongkorn University partnered with KBank, using its experience in digital financial services and platform development to build CU NEX, a unified ecosystem that connects campus services in one place. Launched in 2018, CU NEX was designed around a simple idea. University communities should be able to access the services they need through a single digital gateway. Both organisations sought to go beyond creating another campus application by changing how students interact with the university throughout their daily lives. The objective was to integrate services, reduce complexity and support both academic and lifestyle needs. Today, CU NEX serves as the primary digital touchpoint connecting university members to a broad range of services and experiences within the Chulalongkorn ecosystem. Building a campus ecosystem around user needs The development of CU NEX was guided by three key principles of convenience, integration and contextual relevance. First, university members increasingly expect services to be available through mobile devices. Whether checking schedules, making payments, accessing information or participating in campus activities, users want quick and convenient access. Second, users prefer a centralised platform instead of navigating multiple systems with separate authentication requirements and disconnected interfaces. Third, digital experiences are more useful when they appear naturally within users’ existing journeys. Services become more relevant when they are embedded into everyday activities instead of existing as standalone tools. These principles shaped the architecture of CU NEX and continue to drive its evolution. Integrating academic and administrative services One of the platform’s central functions is the integration of academic and administrative services into a unified experience. Students can access important academic information, campus announcements, learning resources, extracurricular activities, scholarship opportunities and university services through a single interface. Previously isolated touchpoints have been brought together, reducing the complexity often associated with university administration. The simplification extends to processes that traditionally required significant manual effort. For example, tuition payment was once a time-consuming process that required many students to visit bank branches and complete transactions in person. Through CU NEX, payments can be completed digitally, improving convenience while reducing administrative work for students and the university. The platform also provides access to campus facilities and services that support everyday student life, creating a more connected relationship between university resources and student needs. By bringing these functions together, CU NEX turns a collection of individual services into a coherent university experience. Embedding finance into everyday campus life A central aspect of CU NEX is its approach to embedded finance. Instead of positioning banking as a separate destination, financial services are integrated directly into campus journeys where they add value and convenience. Students can open bank accounts through digital processes, receive university debit cards that also function as student identification cards and make payments throughout the campus ecosystem. The integration extends to tuition fees, merchant payments and other university-related transactions, allowing financial activities to become part of daily life instead of a separate process. This model benefits users and the broader ecosystem. Students gain access to secure and convenient digital payment services while developing familiarity with financial services at an important stage in their lives. The university also benefits from greater operational efficiency and reduced reliance on cash-based transactions. By embedding financial capabilities into relevant activities, CU NEX shows how banking services can be more closely connected to customer needs. Extending beyond the classroom While education remains at the core of the platform, CU NEX was designed to support a broader vision of university life. Students spend significant portions of their time engaging in activities outside the classroom, which the platform also covers. Users can discover campus events, explore privileges and promotions, access transport information, locate facilities and stay informed about activities across the university community. The platform also incorporates a rewards mechanism through CU Points, enabling users to receive benefits linked to their engagement with the ecosystem. CU NEX therefore supports academic functions alongside social interaction, personal development and day-to-day campus life. Supporting health and wellbeing As student expectations evolve, universities are increasingly expected to support physical and mental wellbeing alongside academic achievement. CU NEX has responded by expanding into healthcare services and wellness experiences. For university staff, the platform provides access to health records and health-related information that can support their healthcare journeys. Through ecosystem partnerships, users can also access digital health services, including virtual consultations and other healthcare solutions. CU NEX has therefore developed beyond a collection of utilities into a broader platform supporting the health, wellbeing and daily needs of university members. Using AI to create personalised experiences As digital ecosystems mature, personalisation becomes increasingly important. Users expect platforms to understand their preferences, anticipate their needs and provide information relevant to their circumstances. One addition is NEXKY, an AI assistant designed to help university members navigate academic and campus-related matters. Instead of searching through multiple information sources, users can interact conversationally to obtain answers quickly. The platform is also introducing recommendation capabilities that use data and artificial intelligence to deliver more personalised content, activities, services and opportunities. These capabilities help users discover relevant information more effectively while increasing engagement across the ecosystem. They also represent a shift from transactional interactions towards digital experiences that adapt to individual needs. Co-creating innovation with students One characteristic of CU NEX is its emphasis on student participation in platform development. Students are encouraged to become contributors and innovators within the platform. This approach is supported through Life-Long Experimental, or L.L.E., an initiative that enables students to innovate within the CU NEX ecosystem. Through hackathons and programmes such as the CU NEX IT Club, students identify campus challenges, develop solutions and launch services with guidance from KBank specialists. One example is C-Canteen, a student-built solution that enables meal pre-ordering and helps students avoid queues by showing canteen occupancy levels. These initiatives give students practical experience in technology, product development and entrepreneurship while addressing needs within campus life. Strengthening community engagement Digital ecosystems can also foster connections among users. CU NEX has increasingly focused on community initiatives that encourage participation and collaboration across the university. Through features such as digital voting and community engagement tools, the platform enables students to participate more actively in university life. One example is the digitisation of student council elections. According to the partners, making participation more accessible increased engagement and showed how digital tools can support civic involvement within academic communities. The platform’s future roadmap includes digital community boards where students and staff can share information, exchange ideas and communicate in a dedicated environment. These capabilities would extend the platform beyond functional services to support interaction within the university community. Developing CU NEX further The evolution of CU NEX illustrates a broader shift taking place across higher education. CU NEX shows how educational institutions and financial partners can collaborate under a shared long-term vision. By combining digital identity, campus services, community engagement, embedded finance, healthcare services, AI capabilities and student-led innovation within a single ecosystem, the platform has changed how university members interact with their environment. CU NEX aims to be a living ecosystem that continues to evolve through user empathy and community engagement. By supporting learning, wellbeing, community interaction and lifelong growth, it is changing how university life is experienced.
