KUALA LUMPUR: HSBC has appointed veteran banker Andrew Sill as the new head of commercial banking in Malaysia.
HSBC said on Friday that Sill, who is based in Kuala Lumpur, would be responsible for commercial banking, global trade and receivables finance, and the global liquidity and cash management businesses.
It said his appointment took effect on June 13. He takes over from Mahbub Ur Rahman who had s moved to Bangladesh as deputy chief executive officer (CEO) and country head of CMB.
Sill's significant transaction banking experience in Asia will help him drive the commercial banking performance in Malaysia.
Prior to joining HSBC, he was with the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in Malaysia where he was CEO. He joined RBS in 2000 and held various roles in Singapore and Malaysia. He is currently chairman of the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce.
HSBC said Sill reports regionally to Stuart Tait, the regional head of commercial banking, Asia-Pacific and in Malaysia to Mukhtar Hussain, CEO of HSBC Malaysia.
Mukhtar said HSBC’s history is founded on commercial banking and remains at the heart of the bank's identity as the world’s leading trade and business bank.

“Andrew’s experience will be an asset to the management team. His knowledge of transaction banking and ties to the business community will be invaluable as we look to build strong and sustainable businesses that focus on the needs of our customers,” Mukhtar added.
