Amit Shrikar Talgeri awarded Chief Risk Manager of the Year in Asia Pacific for strengthening Axis Bank’s risk architecture and fostering sustainable governance

Amit Shrikar Talgeri, Chief Risk Officer at India’s Axis Bank, has transformed the bank’s risk function and integrated sustainable practices into the framework.

Jakarta, Indonesia, 22 May 2025—Amit Shrikar Talgeri, Chief Risk Officer of Axis Bank, received the award for Chief Risk Manager of the Year in Asia Pacific at the TAB Global Business Achievement Awards, held at the Ritz Carlton Jakarta.

The award recognises individuals who manage beyond traditional compliance, embedding risk management into the core of their business. Their work strengthens long-term performance and builds trust. It is given to those who demonstrate exceptional foresight, innovation and impact in risk governance, resilience and organisational culture.

In an operating environment shaped by rapid regulatory change, digital disruption, and heightened geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty, the role of the Chief Risk Officer has become central to the sustainability and strategic direction of financial institutions.

Under Talgeri’s leadership, Axis Bank has institutionalised a risk-centric culture, that influences both its strategy and daily operations. He led the development of an enterprise-wide risk framework aligned with COSO ERM and ISO 31000 standards, enabling the bank to navigate market volatility and systemic liquidity pressures with resilience.

Axis Bank’s risk appetite is now clearly communicated across all business units and supported by real-time risk monitoring and robust data governance. The risk function has shifted from a reactive mode to a proactive one, enabling disciplined business growth. This is reflected in the bank’s strong capital adequacy and low credit costs even as it operates in a volatile market.

Technology-led risk intelligence

Talgeri has led the transformation of the bank’s risk function through model-driven, technology-enabled capabilities. He oversaw the development and independent governance of more than 250 analytical models used for credit scoring, fraud detection, early-warning systems and stress testing. These models undergo stringent validation and are monitored through a red-amber-green signalling system to ensure they remain accurate and fit for purpose.

He also spearheaded the development of a centralised risk data mart, enhancing real-time visibility and responsiveness. Advanced analytics, powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, now support Axis Bank’s underwriting, operational risk monitoring and fraud prevention, improving decision quality and cost efficiency.

Leading with responsibility and sustainability

Talgeri’s approach to risk is not limited to financial or operational metrics. He has embedded environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks, climate considerations, cybersecurity and third-party dependencies within the bank’s risk architecture. This integrated view enables Axis Bank to address emerging threats while meeting evolving regulatory and societal expectations. Through this unified governance structure, the bank has strengthened its long-term resilience and contributed to the stability of the broader financial system.

His achievements embody the evolving role of risk leaders in today’s banking industry—balancing control with innovation, compliance with competitiveness, and oversight with foresight.
