Full participation integral to financial integration in ASEAN
Proceedings report from the International Banking Conference 2013, held in conjunction with The Asian Banker Summit 2013 on ASEAN financial integration and the transaction banking industry today. May 08, 2013 | Research*The following are extracts of important proceedings reports on the International Banking Conference 2013 (Day 1 and Day 2) that was held in conjunction with the Asian Banker Summit 2013. Trade flows are clearly shifting to the East As Asian banks are generally more liquid with stronger balance sheets, they are at an advantage when western banks, especially European, deleverage in Asia Pacific. Asian banks are expanding rapidly, eagerly turning international, yet they lack the cash management infrastructure and capabilities that large corporates find essential. Despite pulling out on their transaction banking activities in Asia, international banks are still well aware of their key clients and are anxious to retain them. Essentially, Asian banks’ well-capitalised balance sheets are not sufficient to replace international banks’ cross border capabilities and global presence. Factors such as high pricing, Basel III compliance and conservative risk appetites are not in Asian banks’ favour to win large multinational corporations (MNCs) over. International banks’ deleveraging and Asian banks’ conservative nature might lead to corporates searching for bonds for funding, which could lead to a bond bubble eventually. On a short-term outlook according to OECD, China’s annualised quarterly GDP will be approximately 9%, followed by India with at 7%. OECD’s findings was backed by Deutsche Bank Research - Emerging markets will continue (in 2013) to contribute over 80% of global growth this year, led by EM Asia (62%) – of which 39% is made up by China.
