Malaysia’s digitisation journey – reinforcing sustainable innovation in the financial ecosystem

Malaysia’s economy saw robust growth of 5.6% in the first quarter of 2023, surpassing Indonesia (5%), China (4.5%) and Vietnam (3.3%). This aligns with the projected annual growth rate of 4% to 5% for 2023. However, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank anticipate a moderation in Malaysia’s economic growth due to weakened global trade and slower external demand.

Despite these challenges, Malaysia’s financial services industry has demonstrated resilience and progress. Over the past two years, along with the rest of the world, Malaysia also experienced a surge in demand for contactless financial services on the back of Covid-19. It embarked on an accelerated digital transformation journey, with Bank Negara Malaysia granting five digital bank licences to Malaysia-owned entities.

Incumbents and emerging players leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to expand services including digital payments, e-wallets and buy-now-pay-later.

This year, the Malaysian government’s budget is focused on using technology to sustain the momentum of economic growth and ensure that the benefits are accessible to all. This drive covers various initiatives from cutting down red tape to developing a future-ready workforce.

The Asian Banker Finance Malaysia 2023 advocates sustainable innovation. It brings together senior executives from financial institutions and technology companies for a day of in-depth discussion on the current trends reshaping the financial services industry.
