WHO: Coronavirus situation worldwide ‘worsening’

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday said that the COVID-19 pandemic is worsening globally and warned against complacency in dealing with the disease.

The news comes as the WHO recorded its highest daily tally of new infections. “More than 100,000 cases have been reported on nine of the past 10 days. Yesterday, more than 136,000 cases were reported – the most in a single day so far,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a virtual press conference.

Bulk of the new cases come from the Americas, the new epicentre of the virus after East Asia and Europe. Tedros noted that nearly 75% of the infections recorded on Sunday, 7 June, came from only 10 countries, most of which are in the Americas and South Asia.

“Although the situation in Europe is improving, globally it is worsening,” said Tedros. “More than six months into this pandemic, this is not the time for any country to take its foot off the pedal,” he added.

In light of the mass protests in the United States and beyond following the death of George Floyd, the United Nations agency expressed support toward the fight against racism and urged that protesters continue to observe safety precautions for the viral disease.

“WHO fully supports equality and the global movement against racism. We reject discrimination of all kinds. We encourage all those protesting around the world to do so safely. As much as possible, keep at least one metre from others, clean your hands, cover your cough and wear a mask if you attend a protest,” said the WHO chief.

COVID-19 has infected over 7 million people all around the world and killed more than 406,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
