Analytics show Cyber Monday sales up 27%
Thanks to analytics predictions, retailers rolled out online sales and promotions earlier this year resulting in $1.5b in sales, a large boost over last year’s. November 26, 2012 | Timothy ShimSeveral years ago with the increase in online sales came about the phenomenon known as Cyber Monday, when consumers waited till after the Thanksgiving holidays to snap up items on sale right from the comfort of their homes or offices. This year, retailers now savvy to the trend have started sales early, extending sales on everything from electronics to fashion wear, to cover the entire weekend. IBM on its Digital Analytics Benchmark blog recently said that, “All signs point to Cyber Monday being a banner year.” Web analytics provides behaviour-based marketing and campaign attributions allowing users to know exactly how well their mobile marketing, social media marketing, online advertising or email marketing campaigns are performing. This translates into real numbers on which businesses can accurately base their projections on, as well as help plan future strategy. IBM’s cloud-based digital analytics platform, tracking shopping in real time, showed sales up 27% from last year. Yet, what is more interesting is that the number of consumers using a mobile device to visit a retailer's site was 22%, and 10% actually used their mobile device to make a purchase, showing a shifting trend towards mobile retail payments. Information from IBM’s analytics platform was even able to pinpoint mobile devices used, with traffic from iPhones being highest at 8% versus iPad’s 6.5% and Android’s 5.6%. Earlier this month, analytics proved to be an invaluable campaign tool in US president Barrack Obama’s win over presidential candidate Mitt Romney, with dozens of number crunchers working around the clock to integrate databases into one huge “megafile” that merged the information collected from pollsters, fundraisers, field workers and consumer databases as well as social-media and mobile contacts with the main Democratic voter files in the swing states.
