John Sculley, former CEO of Apple and PepsiCo, discusses building a sustainable business operating model, mastering the distribution network, and lessons learned from his experience as CEO. January 29, 2013 | Editorial1. Building a sustainable business operating model Emmanuel Daniel (ED): Give us a sense of where you are right now, and the kind of activities you’re involved in? John Sculley (JS): I’m focused on transformational businesses. There’s a lot of change going on in the world. I’m particularly interested in opportunities for disruptive innovation in healthcare, so we’re very active in that in the US. We’re active investors in about five healthcare companies from Tele Health to social media consumer engagement, services for wellness to sleep apnea, diagnostics and therapy, to medical sensors and big data analytics. I’m also very involved in mobile wireless services, which is another disruptive area. We’re building wireless services for a number of enterprise applications. I’m involved in leverage buyouts. We’ve been buying various companies in North America. We have now several billion dollars of annual turnover in these companies, and we’re now in the process of moving to Asia. We hope to accumulate $1 billion top line revenue this year in various companies particularly in the IT technology distribution area in India and other Asian countries. ED: Talking about leverage buyouts, it’s a whole range of potential issues and questions to get a sense of what’s going on in that space, but let’s go back to the company you once headed, Apple. It was by no means anywhere close to being a leverage buyout target. It’s now the world’s largest company in business today. Let’s use that as the background to talk about the sustainability of a business or a business model. What do you see when you look at what Apple is today as a trillion dollar company?
