Security remains high on focus list for bank CIOs

Asian banks have indeed been spending large sums competing to produce innovative products and services. Despite all the talk on innovation, CIOs remain highly concerned about security. Staying ahead by designing the next ‘hit’ mobile banking system is important in today’s information driven economies, but protecting customer’s money is still the one of the most important jobs for many CIOs. Ashley Veasey, Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong’s (SCB HK) CIO has been simultaneously focusing on innovation and security, a combination that is not always easy to grapple. “We don’t innovate simply for innovation sake. We innovate to fill a gap in people’s lives. But my main concern is security. Safeguarding our customer’s interests is my main priority,” said Veasey. Breeze, SCB’s mobile banking platform, is an example of their approach to innovation. Launched in 2011 in Hong Kong, the platform was developed in market under Veasey’s watch with the help of a local vendor and has since become one of the hallmarks of the bank. In addition to standard services such as tracking transactions, settling bills and credit card payments, sending checks and obtaining branch or ATM information, innovative services to keep Hong Kong customers’ engaged have been launched through Breeze during the past year. For example Breeze Home, which enables customers to search properties and check valuations, and Breeze Living, which allows card customers to search for merchant privileges, and grab exclusive deals. During the past few months, more Breeze banking and lifestyle apps have been launched in other markets, such as Mcommerce in India, which helps users choose movie or airline tickets.
