Visa dumps Global Payments over breach affecting 1.5 million cards
Visa removes payment processor from list of approved service providers but still may stand a chance of reinstatement. April 16, 2012 | Lalitha SivanesanAtlanta-based Global Payments, a processor of card transactions, suffered a breach in its card data processing system. The company, which processes transactions for payment network operators such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover Financial and American Express, discovered in early April that hackers had obtained unauthorized access into its system in early March, the first time the company has been hit by a breach. Global Payments, which also provides its services to government agencies, businesses and others in Canada, Europe and the Asia Pacific region, estimates the number of credit cards affected by the breach to be less than 1.5 million credit cards.
