Kathleen Stalk, payment solutions executive at IBM, shares her views on trends in mobile payment systems, and working with the Cloud. June 18, 2011 | EditorialEmmanuel Daniel (ED): I'm very pleased to be able to speak to Kathleen Stalk, payments solutions executive at the IBM Banking Centre of Excellence. She looks at the development of the payments industry worldwide. I'm very pleased to be able to speak with you regarding how IBM is configured to handle the payments business and also your thoughts on the payments industry worldwide. How do you see the mobile payments space evolving? And what are some of the bets that IBM is taking in terms of where they think it will be heading? Kathleen Stalk (KS): We've been working with our client base both on the telecom side and the banking side because we see that there is a lot of collaboration that the two industries can get as entities working together. Sometimes there's a lot of conversation that, of course, has to go on because the banks bring a certain piece to the table. The telecoms, of course, already have the telephone devices in people's hands, and so what we need to do is make sure that we can integrate the financial efforts stick to that. ED: There was a time when both constituents wanted to dominate the payments arena, the telcos thought that they provide a service and therefore the payments were to be routed to them. We've got to collect a lot of information and all of that and the banks didn't want to give that away. KS: And likewise the telcos didn't want to give away their subscri...
