United Bank of Africa appoints Abiola Bawuah as regional CEO

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) appointed Mrs. Abiola Bawuah as its regional CEO. Bawuah took the reins from her predecessor Mr. Oliver Alawuba on March 1, 2018. She has been successful in her previous endeavours as the CEO of other firms.

Mrs. Bawuah started leading the regional businesses of UBA from the beginning of March. She is the first Ghanaian and woman to hold the position. Prior to this appointment, Bawuah successfully managed UBA Ghana. Under her leadership, UBA Ghana achieved a 134% growth in profit on a yearly basis. Due to her dedication, the bank also performed well in Gross Earnings and Customer Deposits with a recorded growth of 114% and 68% respectively.

Following this growth, UBA Ghana earned the title of Best Financial Performance at the 2017 Ghana Banking Awards (GBA) and Bawuah was named 2016 CIMG Marketing Woman of the Year. In the same year, she won the title of Finance Personality of the Year Award at the Ghana Accountancy and Finance Awards. These achievements and recognitions are what encouraged UBA to appoint her as its West African regional leader.

Upon starting her time in office, Mrs. Abiola Bawuah stated: “My greatest wish that the six countries that I have been tasked to lead will grow in leaps and bounds.”

Bawuah holds several diplomas from various prestigious Universities. She firstly earned a BSc in Actuarial Science from the University of Lagos, then went on to study Law at the University of London and later on she received an EMBA with a focus on Finance from the University of Ghana. She also gained several leadership qualifications from Columbia University, University of New York and even from Harvard Business School.

All these qualifications allowed Bawuah to have a thriving career in the law and banking industries. She was previously the executive director of Zenith Bank and the Head of Sales at the Standard Chartered Bank. She also worked as the Investment Officer of the Ghanaian law firm “Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa & Ankomah”. Moreover, Bawuah was the Relationship Manager and the authorized dealing broker of CAL Bank.

As the regional CEO of UBA, Bawuah will now oversee all the businesses of UBA’s Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote D’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone charters. The new CEO will seek new partnerships with stakeholders in the aforementioned countries for the sake of “adding value and developing the UBA business in Africa”.
