Leiden, April 2nd 2013 - UL is proud to announce that it has been accredited to develop and operate a MIFARE Test Center focused on the functional certification of MIFARE enabled products.
UL will develop and operate a MIFARE Test Center that will offer functional certification services of all current and future MIFARE family members, including MIFARE Classic, MIFARE PlusTM as well as MIFARE DESFireTM. These certification services from UL are available to all MIFARE licensed companies from September 2013 onwards. The UL MIFARE Test Center will guarantee interoperability across 3rd party MIFARE implementations in an increasingly global multi-vendor environment. It will certainly help to avoid the potential occurrence of interoperability issues in the field at MIFARE installations in public transport, access management, event ticketing, loyalty and e-purses. More importantly, the certification will not cause any additional delay in the development time of MIFARE enabled products; on the contrary, it will speed up the time to market.
“UL is very pleased to provide MIFARE certification services. The UL MIFARE Test Center will fit extremely well within our test center strategy. We are confident that our experience from performing similar certifications of behalf of MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Global Platform as well as our dedication and commitment, will bring positive results. We believe that the UL MIFARE Test Center will be a success and will ensure interoperability and trust in the market,” commented Dirk Jan van den Heuvel, Managing Director of UL's transaction security service line.
MIFARE is the leading open architecture technology platform for contactless ticket, card, mobile and reader solutions. With more than 50 million reader core components and five billion smart card ICs sold, MIFARE is a proven and reliable technology and represents the largest installed base worldwide. Over 1,000 business partners are part of the open MIFARE community and ecosystem. In 2012, MIFARE solutions accounted for more than 80% of all contactless ticketing credentials deployed according to ABI Research.
NXP as creator of the technology has licensed a range of companies to develop and host a MIFARE implementation on secure microcontroller chips for deployment in multi-application markets. These companies include leading chip manufacturers and smart card manufacturers. In support of a growing number of licensees and strongly increased availability of MIFARE licensed product implementations, companies using MIFARE in multi-application markets are increasingly requesting for proof of interoperability. NXP has acknowledged this market need for the establishment of an independent test center offering functional MIFARE certification services for which it has selected UL. This test center will ensure interoperability and trust between the MIFARE implementations of the different MIFARE licensees.
