Alipay, a digital payments platform, operated by Ant Financial Services Group, announced that it is further expanding its footprint in the Americas through a partnership with Openpay in Mexico. Now, Alipay’s more than 600 million active users in China will be able to use Alipay to make purchases from Openpay’s affiliated businesses in Mexico. Alipay is China’s leading payment provider and the primary means of online and mobile payment for Chinese consumers.
“An increasing number of Chinese consumers are shopping for products in Mexico that they can’t find at home, and they want to be able to purchase those items with the payment method they use most often,” said Souheil Badran, President, Alipay Americas. “Our partnership with Openpay not only connects Mexican merchants with Chinese consumers seeking their products and services, but also opens new revenue channels for merchants in Mexico. Openpay’s comprehensive payments platform enables regional merchants in Mexico, large players through to SMEs, to quickly and seamlessly accept online payments. Openpay has a network of more than 17,500 associated points of sale in Mexico, connected in real-time through its Paynet network, which allows cash payments to be made online. Openpay’s clients in Mexico include multi-national e-commerce merchants and well-known travel industry leaders such as airlines, ride-sharing companies, and ticketing platforms. Alipay’s partnership with Openpay will help Mexican merchants meet the growing Chinese demand for Mexican products. According to the Inter-American Development Bank, Mexican exports to China increased 28 percent in 2017.
